The British Club Bridge Section was inaugurated in October 2007 to provide a friendly environment where bridge players could come on a Monday evening to enjoy a game of duplicate bridge. Our aim was to attract and retain bridge players of all standards whilst always making newcomers, and novices in particular, feel welcome. Since 2007 our activities have extended to quarterly tournaments, improvers’ sessions and beginners’ classes.
Monday Night Bridge
We play every Monday night in the Globe from 7.00 (prompt) and aim to finish by 10.30. Players of all standards are welcome so long as they are comfortable with silent bidding and the basic rules of duplicate bridge. We typically play about 20 boards at a fairly relaxed pace (no shouting or bells!) Entry fee is BD1 and the bulk of the money collected is distributed in prizes the following week.
Come and learn how to play the best card game in the world! These classes are run annually from September every Saturday afternoon from 2.30 to 5.00 in the Ascot restaurant. The lessons start right from the beginning and no prior knowledge is assumed. Everybody is welcome, even if you have never played cards before. The lessons are free but attendees are asked to make a commitment to coming. The next course is scheduled to start on Saturday 17 September. If you want to join this course it is essential to register with the British Club reception in advance.
We play in the Globe Bar every Wednesday afternoon from 2.00 to about 5.30. Players of all standards are welcome so long as they are familiar with silent bidding. This is the ideal setting for novices to get used to the duplicate bridge environment. The atmosphere is friendly, the pace relaxed and there is plenty of time to discuss the hands after play and learn from the more experienced players. BD 1 entry.
These are held quarterly on a Saturday and we typically play about 40 boards. We are fortunate to have attracted sponsorship from the British Club and JLT Insurance Brokers, which enables us to give a prize to every participant. Entry is open to British Club Bridge Section members and their guests. These events are fun days starting in the morning, with a break for a light lunch and followed by the prize giving and a dinner or a BBQ. Players’ partners are welcome to join us at the festivities after the tournament. The cost of tournament entry and meals is subsidised for Section members.
If you wish to be involved in any of our activities please contact Sarah Kavanagh at Britclubbs@gmail.com. We currently have over 40 active members. Membership costs just BD10 annually and our membership year runs from October (when we hold our AGM).
